In 2004, the original runway was maintained and adapted so as to be able to handle additional traffic; this runway now measures 3,500 mts. by 60 mts.
In 2004, the Grupo ASUR administration authorized
the project for the construction of the second runway of the International Airport of Cancun.
In total, the investment exceeded $500 million Mexican pesos (US$67 million); the work was started in the third quarter of 2005 and was inaugurated just a few months ago, on October 10 of last year; the airport opened its doors for the occasion and organised 5 and 10 kilometer races on the actual runway.
The new runway measures 2,800 mts. by 45 mts. and runs parallel to the original runway at a distance of 1,500 mts., thus allowing simultaneous landing and take-off options, the only airport in Mexico with this capacity.
In addition to the new runway, the project included the construction of a new control tower, the largest in Latin América, new taxiways ( 23 mts. wide) and new installations for the Fire and Rescue Services (the said services possess IX certification).
