Volaris
|
| Volaris is an equal share partnership between
3 of Mexico's most important companies and a foreign airline. |
Operating with Airbus 319s., of which it leased 4 to begin services,
Volaris launched operations on March 13, 2006., with its inaugural flight
between its base, Toluca International Airport , and Tijuana. Other destinations offered
initially were Toluca-Cancun, Toluca-Guadalajara and Toluca-Monterrey,
as well as Monterrey–Guadalajara. Nowadays the company offers 24
destinations (see below).
On January 12, 2006., the company signed a contract with Airbus for the acquisition of 16 - A319s with options for 40 additional A320 family aircraft. On October 23, 2007., the company received its 14th aircraft.
On November 11, 2008., Volaris signed the first part of a code-share agreement with the US airline Southwest; they plan to announce their flight itineraries and other details early 2010. As of next year, Southwest will become a distribution channel for Volaris throughout the US market, including through its official Web page.
Given the participation of Televisa in Volaris, it is not
difficult to understand why the company offers excellent onboard
entertainment for its passengers, the airline actually has its own TV channel.
Another plus is the free shuttle
service from the business district of Santa Fe, in Mexico City, to the
Toluca International Airport, the airline’s operational base. When arriving in Toluca the cost of the
shuttle to Santa Fe is 15 dollars.
The company also operates airport shuttle services in other cities:
Cancun (50 pesos) and Playa del Carmen (90 pesos) in the south; Puebla
(50 pesos) in the center of the country and Tijuana-San Diego in the
north.
The companies that make up the ownership are Inbursa (a Mexican bank), Protego-Discovery (a Mexican investment
fund), TACA (the El Salvadorian airline) and Televisa (Mexico’s largest
media corporation), together spending 100 million pesos for the preparation and launch of the airline.
