Taxis abound in the city but we advise you to use the official taxis for security reasons - many people have been assaulted in taxis - a little common sense here goes a long way - but do take care!
In general, if you're staying at a hotel the reception will organize a taxi for you; at the airport use only the official taxis which operate and charge by zones; fares are paid at ticket booths before actually entering a taxi, thus avoiding the chances of drivers over-charging, both newcomers and locals alike are often taken advantage of in this way.
Before you board any taxi make sure the drivers official identification is on show (ID should have a photograph of the driver and an official seal) and check that there is a taxi metre in operation and that it is reset before you begin your journey.
In general taxi drivers in Mexico do not expect a tip unless they've helped you with your luggage or in some other manner which can be considered as being above and beyond his actual duty - 5 or 10 pesos would be well appreciated in these circumstances.
After 10 p.m. and before 5 a.m. there is a 20% surcharge added to the price shown on the metre.
In general it is safer to use the radio taxis although you'll pay above the general rate; when you ring them get the license number of the cab they are sending and wait for that particular cab - don't forget to check the number you were given against the number on the cab before entering.
The list of taxi companies in the city is never-ending but we provide the following radio-cab option as we are sure you will receive good service from this company.
