Mexico's Customs Office
In the 1700s
In the port of Acapulco, commercial trade
was carried out by way of sporadic orders and Royal Warrants; in 1702 the first
regulation regarding commercial trade between The Philippines and New Spain was
elaborated.
The Viceroy Casafuerte issued, in 1728, a Warrant to the
effect that none of the merchandise that entered the Port of Veracruz could
touch soil without the consent of the Justice Official or the Alderman. The
penalty for non-compliance was the confiscation of all the goods in question.
The establishment of the Royal Customs Agency of the Port of Acapulco
has been verified to have taken place around the year 1776.
In 1795, the
Consulado de Comerciantes de Veracruz (Consulate of Merchants of
Veracruz) was established, the first professional association of this field, and
whose members contributed to the improvements made to both the Port and the
City.
