The region continues to maintain its heavenly atmosphere along with an incredibly varied gastronomic offering. Also found here are splendid architectural gems from the pre-hispanic era such as the Pyramid of Kukulkan at Chichen Itza (right) which is now officially one of the seven new wonders of the world.

Merida, the state capital, is a beautiful walled city, a necessity to prevent attacks from the pirates who frequented the Caribbean in centuries past.
