Metrobus Services in Mexico City

Open Map of Metrobus Route

Running the length of Avenida Insurgentes from Indios Verdes, in the north, to San Angel (Dr. Gálvez), in the south, is what is known as the Metrobus. The route covers a total distance of 19.7 kms according to the Official Metrobus Web page.

Avenida Insurgentes is the longest street in Mexico City (reputedly the longest in the world) and is split, more or less in half, at the Insurgentes Metro station. This street is famous for its shopping options, north of Metro Insurgentes, and exclusive nightlife, south of Metro Insurgentes.

To take this transportation option, which travels along an exclusive-use central reservation and is thus quicker than the normal traffic at peak hours (a definite advantage), one has to purchase a smartcard costing 8 pesos from machines on the stations/terminals, each journey costs 3.50 pesos.

Payment for the journey is carried out by recharging the smartcard in machines in the stations/terminals - these machines accept both coins and notes; generally there is an attendant/policeman on hand for any problems.

If problems persist with your smartcard and can not be resolved by the attendant call the official Metrobus helpline on 5130-3597.

According to local government figures, as many as 260,000 passengers choose this mode of transport on a daily basis. Sometimes it seems like they're all on the same bus as you.

This service is quick, at times even quicker than taxis if you're just travelling along Insurgentes, and of course cheap. However, at peak times it gets very crowded, especially if you happen to be carrying bags.

Trolleybus Services in Mexico City

Mexico City's trolleybus network is operated by the local government and is safe and reliable. In general this service operates from 5 a.m. (5:30 on Sundays) to 10 p.m., although the last daily service can vary depending on the line in question.

The cost of a journey on this form of transport is just 2 pesos, and you must pay with the exact fare as drivers are not allowed to proportion change, take note or you'll end up paying more than necessary.

For a more precise indication of the operating hours and a guide to the routes open:

Turibus - Tourist Bus - Services in Mexico City

In addition to the regular public transport bus services in the city there is also a TÚRIBUS for, you guessed it, tourists. Both locals and visitors can enjoy the chance to tour the historical, cultural and architectural gems of the city.

As the system allows you to get on and off throughout the route using the same ticket to take a later one (same day) this is a good option for a quick introduction to the city and a chance to get your bearings, especially when you can choose the time and speed that best suit your plans.

These double-decker buses are available daily (except Christmas and New Year's Day) between Chapultepec - Avenida Reforma - and the Historical Centre from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and can be boarded at the following locations:

Auditorio Nacional .  Museo de Arte Moderno
Centro de Cultura Casa Lamm .  Monumento a la Independencia
Hemiciclo a Juárez .  Zócalo (Constitution Square)
Museo Franz Mayer .  Monumento de la Revolución
Monumento de la Independencia .  Museo Nacional de Antropología
Museo de Historia Natural

Taxi Services in Mexico City

Taxis abound in the city but we advise you to use the official taxis for security reasons - many people have been assaulted in taxis - a little common sense here goes a long way - but do take care!

In general, if you're staying at a hotel the reception will organize a taxi for you; at the airport use only the official taxis which operate and charge by zones; fares are paid at ticket booths before actually entering a taxi, thus avoiding the chances of drivers over-charging, both newcomers and locals alike are often taken advantage of in this way.

Before you board any taxi make sure the drivers official identification is on show (ID should have a photograph of the driver and an official seal) and check that there is a taxi metre in operation and that it is reset before you begin your journey.

In general taxi drivers in Mexico do not expect a tip unless they've helped you with your luggage or in some other manner which can be considered as being above and beyond his actual duty - 5 or 10 pesos would be well appreciated in these circumstances.

After 10 p.m. and before 5 a.m. there is a 20% surcharge added to the price shown on the metre.

In general it is safer to use the radio taxis although you'll pay above the general rate; when you ring them get the license number of the cab they are sending and wait for that particular cab - don't forget to check the number you were given against the number on the cab before entering.

The list of taxi companies in the city is never-ending but we provide the following radio-cab option as we are sure you will receive good service from this company.
