The Palace of
FINE ARTS
 

The beautiful Palacio de Bellas Artes, captures the essence of Mexican culture. The construction was initiated in 1905, in an art nouveau style, and terminated in 1934, undergoing an art deco influence.

Fascinating murals and cultural events including art exhibitions, theatre and concerts offer something for everyone. The bookstore is a good place for gifts.

ANTIGUO PALACIO DEL ARZOBISPADO
 

 

THE FORMER PALACE OF THE ARCHBISHOP

This 17th Century building houses the modern art collection of Mexico's Finance Ministry, and is living proof that many of Mexico's contemporary artists have indeed paid their taxes, all be it in kind; luckily, of course, for the visiting public.

National History Museum

Located on the top of a hill, the former residence of Emperor Maximilian, which nowadays houses the Museo Nacional de Historia (National History Museum), the castle's construction was begun in the late 18 th Century by one of the last Viceroys, then enlarged by Maximilian of Hapsburg. Decorating the interior walls of this castle are murals by Orozco, Siqueiros and O´Gorman. Having walked up the pathway leading to the castle is the National History Gallery, which describes the struggle for the Mexico's Independence. Open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

An excellent collection of the masters of modern art, including works by Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Velasco, Siqueiros and Tamayo; other traveling exhibitions are also on offer here by both national and international artists.

A fine selection of European art, part of which was donated by the King of Spain to the Academia de Arte San Carlos in the 18 th Century. This former Jesuit college is an important location if you are interested in the history of Mexican mural art, and especially so for the work of José Clemente Orozco. Occasionally it is the host of other important art genres.

El Papalote, the Children's Museum, is located in the second section of the Bosque de Chapultepec. one of the largest and most sophisticated museums of the world, it has a total of 250 interactive exhibits. There are also impressive films shown here on the giant IMAX screen, topics covered are Mexico, the Maya and Space, among others.

A 16th-Century convent, now host to a collection of 20th-Century paintings by Latin American artists. One of the highlights here is a collection of disrespectful caricatures of José Luis Cuevas, one of Mexico's best-known artists, drawn by several of his artist friends.

MUSEO NACIONAL DE ANTROPOLOGÍA
 

 

NATIONAL ANTHROPOLOGY MUSEUM

Constructed around a large patio, the National Anthropology Museum contains sections dedicated to the ancestors of all the different regions of Mexico. Among the exhibits here is the famous Aztec calendar, the unofficial symbol of the Mexican nation, as well as the colossal Olmec heads. There is also an enormous statue of Tlaloc, the Rain God, by the Reforma entrance.
