Museums in the City of Acapulco

HISTORY MUSEUM OF ACAPULCO - "FUERTE DE SAN DIEGO"

This museum is a focal point for the history of the State of Guerrero. The local indians, known as the "Yopes," put up a brave front of resistance against the Spanish "conquistadores," but once the locals were finally defeated, the Spaniards were able to begin their domination of "the other sea," as Hernán Cortés is reputed to have stated, in reference to the Pacific Ocean.

This was where trade with the east began, with the so called Manila Galleons and their Chinese counterparts, known as Nao, which provided the Spanish and American producers with new markets in the Far East and, of course, vice versa.

The scene of marine battles between pirates and seafarers, Acapulco Bay, due to its strategic location, was chosen as the site for the construction of the Fuerte de San Diego (San Diego Fort), however, the first time it was constructed it was destroyed by an earthquake in the year 1776, and then built again in its present form.

With its pentagonal structure, the Fuerte de San Diego is a stone construction surrounded by a moat and several enclosures. These walls and strongholds are now home to the Museo Histórico de Acapulco (History Museum of Acapulco).

This building was also witness to the War of Independence, during which it gave sanctuary to the Spanish, but was finally handed over to the forces led by José María Morelos y Pavón, after a battle lasting more than two years.

Currently, the Fuerte de San Diego acts as a cultural space for both permanent and touring exhibitions, as well as musical and theatrical performances.

According to legend, the cellars of the Fort, which are today flooded by sea water, were the site of a tunnel leading to the beach, excavated by the Spaniards for use as an emergency exit in the case of the Fort being overrun by invading pirate hordes.
